The Journey
“We’re surrounded with messages implying that we need to alter ourselves physically.
I studied Culture and Communication at the University of Lancaster, so I thought I understood how these influences affect society. I was wrong.
I found out that my daughter’s friend was saving money for breast implants. She was 13 years old! I knew I had to act.
To demonstrate to young girls that beautiful bodies come in all shapes and sizes, I created the Beautiful Women Project.”

Phase 1: The Casts
From August 2003 to October 2004, Cheryl-Ann cast over 100 women volunteers, aged 19 to 91. By applying strips of moist plaster bandage to each woman’s front torsos from the neck to the hipline, she created casts that became the molds for Phase 2. |

Phase 2: The Sculptures
Cheryl-Ann lined the plaster casts with slabs of white clay. When the clay dried to a leather-hard stage, she removed the casts and cleaned the surface of the clay. Then, for each sculpture, she created unique surface decorations, reflecting each woman’s spirit. |

Phase 3: The Beautiful Women Project
The Beautiful Women Project exhibition is touring public galleries across the continent, accompanied by curriculum materials and resources. Presentations and workshops about the art, body image, media influences, and healthy living reinforce the message of self-acceptance. |
